Puzzlewood (grid reference SO578092) is an ancient woodland site and tourist attraction, near Coleford in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England.[1][2] The site, covering 14 acres (5.7 ha), shows evidence of open-cast iron ore mining dating from the Roman period, and possibly earlier.
Over a mile of pathways were laid down in the early 19th century to provide access to the woods, and provide picturesque walks. The area contains strange rock formations, secret caves and ancient trees, with a confusing maze of paths.
The site is listed as a regionally important geological site in the 'Forest of Dean Local Plan Review'.[3]

Stormy day at Selsey West Sussex
The earliest evidence of human habitation in the Selsey area goes back to the Stone Age.[8] Various stone implements have been found which date to the Palaeolithic period.[9] People have been living in the area ever since.[10][11][12][13]
Towards the end of the first century B.C. the Atrebates possessed three large urban centres (known as oppida) that served as the tribal mints and possibly the kings court. These were located near modern Silchester, Winchester and the Chichester-Selsey area. So far, in the Chichester-Selsey area, there is no archaeological evidence to confirm this, although various coins from the Atrebates rulers named Commius, Tincommius, Verica, Eppillus, and Cunobelin were found on Selsey beach in 1877, and it is thought that these coins would have been minted locally.[14][15] The 17th century antiquarian William Camden , and others have posited that the Atrebates settlement was located at the Mixon rocks, now south of Selsey Bill. More recent hypotheses have suggested that the Chichester-Selsey oppidum was distributed across the region[16][17][18] [19]
Some Anglo-Saxon gold fragments were found on the beach between Selsey and Bognor, these were dated as late 6th/ 8th century and what made them particularly interesting is that they had a runic inscription on them, the fragments were handed over to the British Museum.[20][21]
Selsey was the capital of the Kingdom of Sussex, possibly founded by Ælle. Wilfrid arrived circa 680 and converted the kingdom to Christianity, as recorded by the Venerable Bede.[22] Selsey Abbey stood at Selsey (probably where Church Norton is today),[23] and was the cathedra for the Sussex Diocese until the Council of London ordered the removal of the See to Chichester in 1075, during the reign of William the Conqueror.[24]

In the Domesday Book Selesie is mentioned under the hundred of Somerley:[25]
"The Bishop(of Chichester) holds Selesie in domain.[26] In the time of King Edward it was rated at ten hides, and so it continues. The arable is seven plough lands.[26] There are two ploughs in the demesne, and fourteen villains with eleven bondsmen have five ploughs.".[26][27][28]
The manor of Selsey remained in the Bishop of Chichesters hands until 1561, when it was taken over by the crown.[27]
In July 1588 the Spanish Armada arrived off the Isle of Wight with the intention of attacking Portsmouth.[29] The wind changed direction to the south-west. Men from the Manhood Peninsula serving under Francis Drake conceived a plan to lure the Spanish fleet onto the Owers rocks (off Selsey).[18][29] However the Spanish Admiral, recognising the danger, decided to head for Calais.[29]

This was CPA450 from Hong Kong via Taipei, and the aircraft will return to Hong Kong non-stop as CPA505. The other 747 did the reverse rotation of CPA504 non-stop and CPA451 via Taipei. These flights (and flight numbers) have been in use since the 1980s.

In The Garden
I made this picture by placing my tripod mounted camera with a wide angle zoom lens at the base of the flowers to be photographed. I set the camera's mirror lock-up function to reduce vibration and set the cameras self-timer to ten seconds to allow any movement in the camera to disappear before the shutter fired. I used the cameras spot meter to meter off one of the green leaves before set-up to get the correct exposure.

After 55 years of service today was the last day of RNZAF P-3 Orion operations with a two-ship flyover of many towns of the South Island, before a final landing at Woodbourne Airport (combined military and domestic airport) near Blenheim.
The planes (avionics etc) have been upgraded several times over the years. I first saw one in late 1971 when I was 16 years old.

The Rollright Stones are a complex of three Neolithic and Bronze Age megalithic monuments near the village of Long Compton, on the borders of Oxfordshire and Warwickshire. Constructed from local oolitic limestone, the three monuments, now known as the King's Men and the Whispering Knights in Oxfordshire and the King Stone in Warwickshire, are distinct in their design and purpose. They were built at different periods in late prehistory. During the period when the three monuments were erected, there was a continuous tradition of ritual behaviour on sacred ground, from the 4th to the 2nd millennium BCE.[1]
The first to be constructed was the Whispering Knights, a dolmen that dates to the Early or Middle Neolithic period. It was likely to have been used as a place of burial. This was followed by the King's Men, a stone circle that was constructed in the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age; unusually, it has parallels to other circles located further north, in the Lake District, implying a trade-based or ritual connection. The third monument, the King Stone, is a single monolith. Although its construction has not been dated, the dominant theory amongst archaeologists is that it was a Bronze Age grave marker.
The British philologist Andrew Breeze has proposed that the name "Rollright" is from the Brittonic phrase *rodland rïx 'wheel enclosure groove', where *rïx 'groove' refers to a narrow valley near Great Rollright and *rodland 'wheel enclosure' refers to the King's Men circle.[2] By the Early Modern period, folkloric stories had developed about the Stones, telling of how they had once been a king and his knights who had been turned to stone by a witch. Such stories continued to be taught amongst local people well into the 19th century. Meanwhile, antiquarians such as William Camden, John Aubrey and William Stukeley had begun to take an interest in the monuments. Fuller archaeological investigations were undertaken in the 20th century, culminating in excavations run by George Lambrick in the 1980s. The site is listed by Historic England as a scheduled monument and was first designated in 1882.[3]
In the 20th century, the stones became an important site for adherents of various forms of Contemporary Paganism, as well as for other esotericists, who hold magico-religious ceremonies there. They also began to be referred to more widely in popular culture, being featured in television, literature, music and art.
