Peccioli Galleria
Looking down on a mural painted on the rooftop of the Galleria dei Gigantes, a new cultural/art space (a repurposed former factory) in Peccioli, near Pisa, Tuscany, Italy. It is taken from the 136-metre walkway that connects the old town with car parking, at the height of 30 metres, which is also an artwork, Endless Sunset.
Peccioli is becoming famous for the Open Air Museum of Contemporary Art (MACCA). Artists have been invited to contribute to many modern art projects for over thirty years.
This image of a Giant inside the Gallery staring through a porthole reminds me of Luis Buñuel's Un Chien Andalou.

Irancy Spring
Cherry Blossom above the village of Irancy, Yonne, Burgundy, France. Looking down on the Church of St. Germain.
Irancy's red burgundy wines are distinctive thanks to a little César (and maybe Tressot) added to the Pinot Noir. It has its own AC. As it lies in a bowl surrounded by hills covered with cherry trees, it is a sheltered sun trap which allows the red grapes to ripen so far north, as this is not far from Chablis.

Benvenuto Cellini, 1545, Bronze sculpture, for Cosimo Medici.
This Bronze sculpture depicts the Greek myth of Perseus beheading Medusa, a hideous Gorgon whose hair had been turned to snakes; anyone who looked at her was turned to stone.
Perseus stands triumphant, naked except for a sash and winged sandals, on top of Medusa's body. Her head, crowned with writhing snakes, is held aloft in his raised hand. Blood spews from Medusa's severed neck.

Connaught
The M.V. Connaught turning around at Hampton Court Pier, River Thames, London.
Salter Brothers of Oxford built the M.V. Connaught in 1911, a beautiful example of an Edwardian River cruiser with spacious open decks, elegant carpets & polished wooden panelling. Connaught can carry up to 193 passengers for sightseeing cruises & 60 passengers for private charters.
M.V. Connaught is one of nine passenger vessels built by the Salter Brothers between 1908 & 1926 for the businessman Joseph Mears. Connaught was built at Salters Oxford slipway and has been cruising between Westminster & Hampton Court for over 100 years.
Meanwhile, Joseph Mears (1871 – 1935) was most notable for co-founding Chelsea Football Club with his brother Gus. They purchased the Stamford Bridge Athletics Ground in 1896 and founded Chelsea Football Club in 1905. The Mears family owned CFC until 1982.
In 1907, Mears acquired the Thames Electric & Motor Launch Co at Eel Pie Island, where he created a large fleet of passenger launches on the Thames.

Ingrid - Stranger 04/100
I noticed Ingrid walking ahead of me at the JF Kennedy Arboretum today. I was heading to the far side of the arboretum to do a butterfly survey for Biodiversity Ireland.
As I drew level she turned & smiled at me. We started chatting as we walked along together. She seemed quite interested in my butterfly survey & told me she enjoyed walking around the arboretum most days. After a couple of minutes Ingrid extended her hand & introduced herself to me & I to her. She asked me where I was from originally & I told her Worcestershire in England. Her accent wasn't Irish either, she told me she was from Slovakia but had been living in Ireland for 13 years & now lived in nearby New Ross. I told her I'd been living in Ireland for 13 years too.
We walked together for a few hundred metres before Ingrid stopped & said she'd better head back. Seeing as my 100 Stranger project had stalled of late I asked her if she'd mind me taking her photo & she said that was fine. It was quite overcast so I asked Ingrid to stand in front of this conifer to give a darker background. I used to P portrait setting on my Canon. I'm quite pleased with this photo, she looks very relaxed & happy.
It was lovely to meet Ingrid today. As we parted company she wished me luck & said she was sure our paths would cross again at arboretum. I hope they do.

Tomato Ramasole
Rare breed tomatoes at the bi-annual Slow Food event in Turin, Piemonte, Italy.
These Torre Canne Regina tomatoes have been grown on the Puglian (Apulian) coast of Italy since the 19th Century. This is at the Alto Salento, between Fasano and Ostuni, cultivated in saline soils.
The Ramsole (bunches) are tomatoes woven with spun cotton cords (the cotton is grown between the rows of tomatoes). They are then hung up for storage from September. This way, they last over winter until the following April.
At one time, having many Ramasole was an expression of social prestige and family wealth, and local women of marriageable age who owned many Ramasole were especially desirable.
They have their own Slow Food Praesidium.

Akaroa is a small town on Banks Peninsula in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand, originally established by French colonialists. The lighthouse is now decommissioned. The name Akaroa is Kāi Tahu Māori for "Long Harbour", which is spelt "Whangaroa" in standard Māori.
Akaroa is also the birthplace of one of my heroes, Frank Arthur Worsley (1872 – 1943). He was a sailor and explorer who served as captain of the Endurance in Ernest Shackleton's Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914–1916. He also served in the Royal Navy Reserve during the First World War.

Are you looking the wrong way?
Visitors admire the church of San Verano in Peccioli, near Pisa, Toscana, Italy.
Meanwhile, below them, the ancient city wall is dotted with photographs depicting the eyes of the inhabitants of Peccioli, staring at the faraway horizon. The artwork is by Vittorio Corsini, "Lo sguardo di Peccioli" (2017), on the Via Borgherucci.
Who is looking the wrong way? Is there a wrong way?
The town of Peccioli, near Pisa, has become an Open Air Museum of Contemporary Art (MACCA). For over thirty years, artists have been invited to contribute to many modern art projects harmonising with this ancient hilltop town. Just walk around and enjoy!

Portrait of a lonely Peacock
Indian Peacock (Pavo cristatus) at Monkey Island on the River Thames, Themes Path Walk.
Set across seven acres, the restored Monkey Island Estate is in the middle of the River Thames. Now, it's once again a private and exclusive hotel in the village of Bray. It can only be accessed either by mooring or by footbridge.
However, before that happened, the estate was in a long decline (and therefore had affordable accommodation for passing walkers like us. (That certainly isn't the case now!)
There, we met this Indian Peacock, who became super friendly very quickly. The reason was that this peacock was alone, with no peahens for company. How sad. I hope he found companions.

Leaning Tower
Leaning Tower of Pisa, Toscana, Italia. I didn't want to take the obvious leaning photo! 1173-1372.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa is the Campanile, (a freestanding bell tower), of Pisa Cathedral. It is known for its nearly four-degree lean, the result of unstable foundations.
The height of the tower is 55.86 metres) on the low side and 56.67 m on the high side. The width of the walls at the base is 2.44 m. Its weight is estimated at 14,500 tonnes. There are 296 or 294 steps because the seventh floor has two fewer steps on the north-facing staircase because of the tilt.
The tower began to lean during construction in the 12th century, due to soft ground which could not support the structure's weight. It worsened through the completion of construction in the 14th century. By 1990, the tilt was 5.5 degrees and the tower was in danger of collapse. The structure was stabilised 1993-2001, reducing the tilt to 3.97 degrees.

Cromwell's Bridge
Also known as Devil's Bridge, the packhorse bridge across the River Hodder was built by Sir Richard Shireburn in 1562, replacing a wooden bridge dating from at least 1331.
Legend says that Oliver Cromwell used it during his march from Skipton to intercept the Royalists at the Battle of Preston in 1648. However, it’s far more likely that he would have crossed the river at the nearby Higher Hodder Bridge.
Whether he did or not, it's a great story, and an excellent old bridge is now in ruin in the snow.

Topsham
Once the Roman port of Exeter, on the River Exe, in Devon. There are many Dutch-style houses here, dating from when Topsham was an important cotton port. Many houses are built using Dutch bricks, brought over as ballast from Holland – in return for wool and cotton exports from South-West England.
While not on the South-West Coastal Path (SWCP), it's a good place to start a section of Jurassic coast which begins at nearby Exmouth.

Beat The Bay
We walked across Morecambe Bay, starting at Arnside and finishing at Grange-over-Sands in Cumbria. Walking with The King's Guide to the Sands is the only way to do this safely.
As the crow flies, it's maybe three miles (5km), but to navigate the sands with ever-changing quicksand, rivers, weather and tides, the distance is more like 8.5 miles (14km). Every tide is different, and the river changes channels frequently, too.
Once you start, there is NO possibility of turning back.
You have to wade the River Kent, and temporary markers are placed for navigation. You can lose all sense of direction if the weather closes in, and your sense of distance is minimal, too. The tidal range is enormous, and the incoming tide's speed is faster than you can run and can come from many directions simultaneously. Most people walk barefoot.
Before the advent of railways in 1857, this crossing was a vital economic route, saving days of transportation by horse and cart and over a day on horseback.
Today, most walks across Morecambe Bay are made for charity, with walkers raising substantial amounts for good causes, adding a significant modern-day twist to this historical journey. I did the walk for the Friends of the Lake District.
Not all walking in the English Lake District is on mountains - this one is truly unique.
The route is also teeming with life; it's an SSSI.
The current King's Guide is Michael Wilson, appointed after Cedric Robinson. The King's Guide dates back to 1538, when the monasteries were dissolved, as before that, guides were monks from Cartmel Priory.
The route has been described as "the most dangerous highway in Britain".

Caciocavallo Impiccato
Caciocavale Impiccato is a Southern Italian speciality found in Campania, Basilicata, Sicily and, here, in Apulia.
Caciocavallo is a spun cow cheese in a gourd-like shape with a top knot called "Horse cheese" as these were tied together in pairs for ageing 2-3 months and then strung over horses like saddlebags for transport to market. It dates back to at least medieval times.
The best cheese is PDO Caciocavallo Podolico, which is from a breed of free-roaming cows and a Slow Food praesidium.
Impiccato is where one of these cheeses is strung up over barbeque coals, slowly melting the cheese. The cheese is scraped off onto toasted bread—mightily delicious and simple.

Te Mata Peak
399m asl, looking north to Havelock North in the background and overlooking Hawke's Bay, North Island, New Zealand.
The name originates from the hillscape in Māori, Te Mata-o-Rongokako, or "the face of Rongokako." Rongokako was an ancestor of the Ngāti Kahungunu, and the area is believed to be his final resting place.
When seen from the north, the peak appears to be the silhouette of a person lying down, which is said to be Rongokako. European settlers called the peak the "Sleeping Giant," a name that is still in use today.

The Chair
In the cellar (Posto delle Anfore) at Joško Gravner, Lenzuolo Bianco, Oslavia (GO), Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy. On the Border with Slovenia.
This is a cellar, almost like no other. 47 Qvevri (Georgian clay amphorae) are buried here and used for naturally fermenting Ribolla Gialla wine. Only their tops can be seen - those with sealed lids are full, and those open are empty. This process will take a year. This is the restarting of ancient methods and completely rejecting modern technologies.
The simple wooden chair is for the winemaker to sit in attendance. There is work to do here, but in between times, a place for contemplation, the only sound being the escape of bubbling carbon dioxide.
Such winemaking simplicity requires huge skill and experience to produce great wine.
The wines will then mature for another six years in another cellar. The results are sublime and also hugely influential.

Kynance Cove on the eastern side of Mount's Bay, Cornwall, England. It is situated on the Lizard peninsula, 3 km north of Lizard Point.
The cove became popular in the early Victorian era, with many distinguished visitors (including Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, and the poets Tennyson and Swinburne).
The SWCP (South West Coastal Path), passes by on the cliffs overlooking the cove.
Kynance Cove and the surrounding coast are owned and managed by the National Trust. It is part of the West Lizard Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and in the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

Nearby Green Road Gardens opened to the public this weekend so as Martin was off work we headed along. We did visit this time last year, they held a fund raising event for the Helen Blake Lifeboat Appeal. Irene Kelly the owner runs various classes throughout the year; basket weaving, plant propagation, seed saving, stone carving etc. You can read about the gardens here www.greenroadgardens.ie
The Roses & herbaceous borders were beautiful but I especially liked this overgrown little pond, perfect wildlife habitat. We walked round & sat on the bench. Once again we counted our blessings. It's 2 years this month since we moved house from Co. Cork, the stress was all worth it HBM!
