YGB (Sealion) 40 ton bogie ballast hopper DB982498 is stored in the Old Bank sidings at Toton, 8th August 2010. DB982498 is from a batch of a hundred YGH Sealion bogie ballast hoppers built at Shildon in 1971. The design dates from 1952 and apart from the bogies and braking systems has remained fairly constant. The design has been built with vacuum brakes (YGV - Sealion), dual brakes (YGH - Sealion) and air braked vacuum piped (YGB - Seacow). Bogies fitted to the early wagons are the Great Western Railway plate type, this was changed to the Gloucester bogie for the wagons built in the early 1970’s and finally the Y27CS. From the early 1990’s many wagons had their brake equipment rationalised. YGH Sealions had the vacuum brake removed and became YGB (if a vacuum through pipe was retained) or YGA. In most cases these were recoded as Seacows. At the same time, some of the YGB Seacows lost their vacuum pipe to become YGAs.

Seven car Meridian 222001 approaches Lenton South Junction with 1D09, 07:30 London St Pancras – Nottingham service, 4th June 2011. 222001 was Built by Bombardier at Brugge in 2004 and was originally a nine car set however East Midlands Trains have reduced the original nine car sets to seven car sets and used the spare vehicles to upgrade the class 222 four car sets to five car sets.

Locomotive History
Originally 5407 it was built by the Armstrong Whitworth Company, Spotswood, Newcastle in 1937 for the London Midland and Scottish Railway. It was one of a batch of two hundred and twenty six engines (which was the largest order ever placed with a private builder by a British Railway Company) worth £2.7 million. When new the engine was delivered to Kettering where it worked for a considerable time on the Midland mainline. In the late 1960’s the engine was transfered between various sheds finally being allocated to Lockstock Hall in 1968. It was one of the final Black 5's withdrawn when it was condemned on the 4th August 1968. The engine was purchased from British Rail by David Davis for £3300 and was subsequently moved to Carnforth for restoration. In 1974 it was bought by Paddy Smith who operated the engine on the British Rail system. In 1989 45407 was moved to Carnforth for new tyres and onto the East Lancashire Railway for the last three years of its boiler ticket. In 1997 Ian Riley bought the engine and had the engine overhauled at his works in Bury. Work included a new tender tank with greater water capacity, the fitting of air brake equipment to enable the engine to haul modern coaching stock and the fitting of TPWS. to comply with modern safety and signalling requirements.

Unit History
The Derby Lightweight diesel multiple units were the first such vehicles to be built en-masse for British Railways. The units were built at Derby works from 1954 to 1955 in various formations, including twelve power-twin units, eighty four power-trailer units, and four, four-car units. M79900 was originally built as part of a two-car twin unit and rebuilt two years after entering service as a single car unit. The Derby lightweight DMU’s were an outstanding success, and led to British Railways ordered many more vehicles from various builders over the next decade. However, with there “non standard” yellow diamond coupling code these units were declared surplus following the closure of many branch lines in the 1960’s and were withdraw, with the last units being withdrawn from normal traffic in 1969. M79900 survived this cull by being transferred to the departmental fleet and became DB975010 Test Coach Iris. It remained on these Research department duties for nearly thirty years and when finally withdrawn it was sold for preservation at the Midland Railway Centre in 2000. It has been restored to its pre departmental condition apart from converting the unit from the yellow diamond coupling code (that made it non-standard) to the more common blue square coupling code. The unique single unit made its debut at the Midland Railway Centre 2005 DMU Gala and moved to the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway in February 2008.

Incident 17 February 2014 en route Addis Ababa Bole - Leonardo da Vinci Rome Fiumicino when the co-pilot hijacked the aircraft over Sudan when the captain left the cockpit. The co-pilot flew to Geneva International where the aircraft held during negotiations, eventually performing an emergency landing with only 10 minutes of fuel remaining and one engine flamed out due to fuel exhaustion. The co-pilot claimed asylum in Switzerland.

Locomotive History
It was built at Swindon works and entered traffic in April 1960, allocated to Gloucester MPD. It had a short working life with British Rail being withdrawn from Swindon MPD in May 1969. Following withdrawal it was sold to the National Coal Board who allocated it to Pye Hill colliery in the East Midlands coalfield and it was still hard at work in 1983. It was acquired for preservation in 1985 after Pye Hill colliery closed in the wake of the 1984 miners' strike.

Standing in the shed yard at Loughborough, Great Central Railway is Fowler “Jinty” 0-6-0T, 47406, 22nd August 2010.
Locomotive History
47406 represents the ultimate development of the Midland Railway six-coupled tank, a design which had started in the 19th century. On formation of the LMS in 1923 the Midland design was used by Fowler as the basis of the LMS standard 0-6-0T and four hundred and twenty two examples were built between 1924 and 1930. 47406 was built by the Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows Lancashire and was originally numbered 16489. It entered traffic in December 1926 and spent its first few weeks in traffic at Warrington MPD, before transferring to Crewe South MPD. October 1928 saw the engine transferred to Carnforth where it would be allocated for the next thirty two years. It was renumbered twice during this period, first to 7406, and following nationalisation it became 47406 in May 1950. From March 1960 the engine made a number of moves, first back to Warrington, then to Workington, Bank Hall, Gorton and finally Liverpool (Edge Hill) for it's last two years of service. It was withdrawn in December 1966, and was sold to Woodham Brothers at Barry and arrived there in the summer of 1967. It left Barry in June 1983 for Peak Rail and arrived at the Great Central Railway in December 21st 1989 where it was stored behind Loughborough shed. It was eventually restored and entered traffic in 2010.

MBA bogie box wagon 500108 stands in the Down yard at Toton, 8th August 2010. Three hundred of these large bogie open wagons were built by Thall at York works as part of the reinvigoration of the freight fleet by EWS with delivery commencing in 1999. Ironically, these big, American-looking MBAs turned out to be too large and one hundred MBA’s have had their height cut-down soon after delivery, being recoded MCA. They are used carrying aggregates, scrap metal, timber, slag and coal and are unloaded using mechanical grabs

Recently repainted in post war LMS black livery 6233 Duchess of Sutherland stands in the yard at Swanwick, 21st March 2010. Thirty eight 7P "Princess Coronation" class locomotives were built between 1937 and 1948 and 6233 was outshopped in July 1938 from Crewe Works and was part of the third batch of the class. These were un-streamlined locomotives, painted in LMS standard crimson lake livery and had a single chimney and no smoke deflectors and cost an estimated of £13,800 each. 6233 was initially allocated to Camden MPD. She acquired a double chimney in March 1941 and because of drifting smoke acquired smoke deflectors in September 1945 before being painted in postwar LMS black livery in September 1946. With the creation of British Railways on 1st January 1948 she was allocated to Crewe North MPD. She was given her BR number 46233 in October 1948 and repainted in BR Brunswick green livery in 1952 or early 1953. In June 1958 she was allocated to Carlisle Upperby MPD before eventually being withdrawn from Edge Hill MPD in February 1964.

First Trans Pennine Express operated Siemens Desiro 185150 heads south through Ulleskelf, 4th March 2010. 185150 is the penultimate unit of fifty one class 185 units built by Siemens in Germany and was delivered in December 2006. Each class 185 vehicle is powered by a Cummins QSK19-R engine through a Voith 3 speed hydrodynamic transmission powering both axles on one bogie with the other bogie unpowered. The class 185 units are designed for quick acceleration and fast hill climbing and provide an improved service to the class 158 units they replaced due to the higher acceleration afforded by the 2250 bhp compared to the 1050 bhp provided by a three car class 158 unit.

CATS Blue Line 113
The Charlotte Lynx Light rail line opened on November 24, 2007. At the time, it was a line from near I-485 to uptown Charlotte almost seventy years after the previous Charlotte streetcar system was dismantled in 1938 in favor of bus service.
The Blue Line runs partly on former Southern Railway roadbed which was abandoned in the 1950s when that railroad opened a new line away from the downtown area. In 2016, an extension opened to the UNCC campus north of town.
