One final shot from my Digital Rebel experiment, and the darkest scene of all of them. Nearly black through the viewfinder, and too cold and impatient to bracket anything, focus and exposure was by wing-and-prayer.
These are some sketchy stairs alongside an overpass. Someone was screaming maniacally in the distance and the overhead lighting was burnt out. Normally my night shooting is a much more serene experience than this.

I'm not going to make a trend of this, but here's one more ancient photo re-edited with how I'm working my photos lately. I was living in Santa Cruz County from 2004 to 2008 so naturally these photos are from the coast there.

I took this photo with the first digital SLR I ever purchased, way back in 2005. Most cameras I've had over the years I've sold off, but this one I held onto. And though the body shows clear signs of wear, the important bits still work. I take it off the shelf and shoot some frames with it whenever I'm feeling nostalgic.
But last night I wanted to put this old camera through some more serious paces -- what would it be like to shoot it the same way I've been shooting my behemoth GFX and cutting-edge Nikon Z? I put a 24mm pancake lens on the thing and placed it on a tripod and walked around some northern bits of Santa Clara.
And here's the results. There's all the things you'd expect: fewer megapixels, less sharpness, more grain, less information in the shadows and highlights. But the overall photo? From the thumbnail alone, I don't know if I'd be able to tell the difference.
The biggest difference by far was the experience of actually shooting the photos -- that's when I was really feeling the two decades of technology. Composing, focusing, exposing are all so much more difficult with the Digital Rebel than with new cameras. The meter is easily overwhelmed by bright light sources, focus is a guessing game, reviewing images practically pointless on the tiny little screen that doesn't even show you the actual RAW file anyway, and composing harkening back to the old film days where "what you see is only sort of what you get".
I don't think any of this is a profound revelation -- it all seems kind of obvious in retrospect. But it was fun to do anyway, and as I edit through the shots I'll post them up here to share them with you. This one might've been my favorite from the night.

This is one of the earlier photos I made after first getting a digital SLR in November 2004. It wasn't very long before I was taking the thing out at night and putting it on a tripod. I had less than zero idea what I was doing, didn't know why my photos weren't in sharp focus or lit the way I expected.
So here we are, 19 years later, and I've re-edited the shot using the styles I've been lately working on, just to see what would happen.

🎉Несмотря на то, что мероприятие было полностью посвящено продуктом видео, фото и дизайнерского направления, в его конце на ожидал приятный сюрприз, а именно – группа «Запрещенные барабанщики».

⏳На самом деле, уже много воды утекло с тех пор, как по радио и на музыкальных каналах каждый день крутили хит этой группы: «Убили негра».

🎎Думаю, что сегодня, в условиях растущей с каждым днем, а то и часом, толерантностью, вряд ли бы на экранах и в колонках прогремело бы такое название.

☺️Но я с радостью вспоминаю этот веселый, незатейливый и поднимающий настроение хит!

It's my first long exposure with an ND400 filter. I put my camera to the handrail and I chosen this point of view. On the right there the confluence museum. The river is the Rhône. The sky was so cloudy.

It's the top of a water tower with a red signal light. This day, the weather was cloudy, grey and rainy. Grey shades of the water tower and the sky was so sad, just this signal light flashing bring a touch of color of this scene.
