St. Clemens war die erste katholische Kirche Hannovers nach der Reformation. Grundsteinlegung in der Calenberger Neustadt war am 6. Juli 1712, die Weihe am 4. November 1718. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurde die Kirche in der Nacht vom 8. auf den 9. Oktober 1943 bei dem schwersten der Luftangriffe auf Hannover von Bomben zerstört und am 25. März 1945 erneut von Bomben getroffen. Nach Kriegsende wurde die Kirche wiederaufgebaut und nach den ursprünglichen Plänen ihres Architekten, des Italieners Tommaso Giusti, mit der von ihm geplanten Kuppel ausgestattet. Sie ist in Norddeutschland die einzige Kirche mit rein italienischem Charakter. St. Clemens was the first Catholic church in Hanover after the Reformation. The foundation stone was laid in Calenberger Neustadt on 6 July 1712, the consecration on 4 November 1718. During the Second World War, the church was destroyed by bombs in the night from 8 to 9 October 1943 during the heaviest of the air raids on Hanover and hit again by bombs on 25 March 1945. In Greek mythology, Melissani was the Cave of the Nymphs. It features a lake surrounded with trees and forest, and is located east of the mountains of Evmorfia and Agia Dynati. Tourism is common. The lake's bottom is covered with stones. Plants grow at the opening of the cave. The color of the stone near the opening is stucco to honey-like brown. The cave was rediscovered in 1951 by Leonardo.

This unique treasure of nature is located just 20 meters from the shores of Lake Orestiada in the city of Kastoria. It is the famous Dragon Cave, which was discovered just in the 1940s, when the lakeside route was set.

Es zeigt künstlerisch wiedergegeben die verschiedenen geologischen Schichten, in denen sich der U-Bahnhof befindet. In zahlreichen Erdfarben wird hier der Bezug zum umliegenden Erdreich hergestellt. The Großhadern underground station was designed by the architectural firm Braun & Hesselberger. The walls and ceiling above the track area are decorated with a mural by Johannes Klinger, which is rare in the Munich underground. It shows artistically the different geological strata in which the metro station is located. The reference to the surrounding soil is made here in numerous earth colours. Die "Endlose Treppe" in München: Geschaffen hat sie Olafur Eliasson. Er ist ein dänischer Künstler isländischer Herkunft, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin und Kopenhagen. Diese Treppe ist die Einzige weltweit, auf der man ohne die Richtung zu wechseln hoch und wieder hinunter gehen kann. Die neun Meter hohe Konstruktion besteht aus zwei stählernen Doppelspiralen. Die Kreisgrabenanlage von Goseck (auch Sonnenobservatorium von Goseck) ist eine jungsteinzeitliche Kreisgrabenanlage am nordwestlichen Ortsrand von Goseck (Burgenlandkreis) in Sachsen-Anhalt. Die ringförmigen Bodenverfärbungen wurden 1991 bei einem Erkundungsflug durch den Luftbildarchäologen Otto Braasch entdeckt und als neues Bodendenkmal gemeldet. Die Anlage wurde zwischen 2002 und 2004 im Rahmen eines interdisziplinären Forschungsprojektes vollständig ausgegraben. Die während des Mittelneolithikums vor etwa 6900 Jahren errichtete Anlage wird der Kultur der Stichbandkeramik zugeordnet. Die Kreisgrabenanlage von Goseck wurde von einigen Archäologen als das älteste Sonnenobservatorium der Welt bezeichnet. Die Anlage ist zusammen mit dem Fundort der Himmelsscheibe von Nebra, dem Großsteingrab Langeneichstädt, der Kreisgrabenanlage von Pömmelte und dem Landesmuseum für Vorgeschichte in Halle eine Station auf der touristischen Straße „Himmelswege“.

(From my personal digital photo archive, 2013) The hermitage of San Bartolomé (Saint Bartholomew) is a temple in the Spanish province of Soria. It is located inside the natural park of the Cañón del Río Lobos, province of Soria, Spain. It was built in the first quarter of the 13th century, when the Romanesque style gave way to the Gothic, a transition that was reflected in that architectural work. It was part of a monastery of which only the chapel remains. It has a plan in the shape of a Latin cross, with three chapels. The two rose windows deserve to be highlighted, one on each gable end of the transept, oriented to the southeast and northwest, whose lattices evoke Muslim influences in the form of the interlacing that makes up a lobed five-pointed star. They have three archivolts of which only the external one is decorated. Some authors relate its existence to the possibility that for a time it belonged to the Order of the Templars, although there is no documentation that can be verified. It is possible that it is confused with the Hermitage of San Juan de Otero, of which only the foundations and little else remain. Although the dedication of the hermitage to Saint Bartholomew, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus who, according to the tradition of the Armenian church, was crucified upside down, skinned alive and beheaded, could be related to the Knights Templar who worshiped various saints who died after being beheaded. Shoot with Ruby in a service alley inbetween the City Theatre and HetPaleis (ThePalace) on Meistraat, using HetPaleis as background. HetPaleis is a building for theatre arts but looks very DDR. We chose that background specifically for this coat. We also used a higher ISO, to gain some grain. A smooth photo just doesn't create the correct atmosphere with a background like this.

The temple is a courtyard of the Staritsky Holy Assumption Monastery (Staritsa, Tver Region) In 1914 in the village. Sergino had two temples - wooden and stone. The wooden temple in the name of the Savior Not Made by Hands was built in 1766, with one chapel - in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. The builder of the temple is a local landowner Alexei Petrovich Izmailov. The wooden bell tower was brought from the town of Staritsa from the church of Simeon the Stylite back in 1867. The stone church had the same name - in the name of the Savior Not Made by Hands and was built in 1897. The church had two chapels: the right one - in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and the left one - the Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God. The iconostasis was painted by the artist Shishkin. The church was a double-height quadrangle crowned with five domes, with a refectory and a hipped bell tower. During the Soviet period, the Church of the Savior was closed and devastated, the altar part and the refectory were destroyed. Currently, the church is not functioning, it needs to be restored. Деревянная колокольня была привезена из г. Старицы от церкви Симеона Столпника еще в 1867 г. Каменный храм носил такое же название - во имя Спаса Нерукотворного и был построен 1897 г. Церковь имела два придела: правый - во имя Николая Чудотворца и левый - Покрова Пресвятой Богородицы. Живопись иконостаса выполнил художник Шишкин. Церковь представляла собой двухсветный четверик, увенчанный пятью главами, с трапезной и шатровой колокольней. В советский период Спасская церковь была закрыта и разорена, разрушены алтарная часть и трапезная. В настоящее время церковь не действует, требует восстановления.

In the second half of the 18th century, M.F. Poltoratsky became the owner of the estate in the village of Krasnoye, Staritsky district, who decided to replace the old wooden church with a new one, copied from the famous Chesme church, built in 1777-1780 by order of Catherine II by architect Yu. M. Felten near Petersburg. His first petition “to build a stone church with his own kosht” dates back to 1783. After a second petition, Bishop Ioasaph Zabolotsky signed the charter of the church on July 30, 1785. The construction of the temple was carried out under the care and dependency of his wife for five years, and was completed in 1790. Built in a pseudo-Gothic style, it is an almost exact copy of the Chesme Church in St. Petersburg, built 10 years earlier. The height of the structure is 24 meters, length and width - about 20 meters. In 1931, the Soviet authorities closed the temple. The bells were sent for melting down, the stone fence was dismantled and transported to Staritsa, to the city garden. The interior of the church was used for the needs of the local collective farm, destroyed and dilapidated. In 1997, the restoration of the temple began. Der Bahnhof wurde 1996 bis 1997 nach einem Entwurf von Hansjörg Göritz an der neu gebauten S-Bahn-Strecke Hannover Hbf, Hannover-Leinhausen und Flughafen als Projekt für die Expo 2000 errichtet und am 1. Juni 1997 für den Regionalverkehr zwischen Hannover und Wunstorf in Betrieb genommen. Die Planung des Bauwerks im Münchner Untergrund übernahm der Architekt Burkhard Schäffer in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Baureferat, Hauptabteilung U-Bahnbau. Die Gestaltung der Wandflächen wurde dem Künstler Franz Ackermann überlassen. Sein Werk "Die große Reise" zeigt auf unzähligen rechteckigen Wandflächen verschiedene Darstellungen aus der näheren Umgebung des Bahnhofs, aber auch aus der ganzen Welt, darunter Berlin und New York. Dazwischen finden sich bunte Wandflächen in knalligen Farbtönen, die dem Bahnhof ein unverwechselbares Aussehen geben und im Längenverhältnis 2:1 (Höhe:Breite) geformt sind. Für diese Gestaltung erhielt Ackermann den mfi Preis Kunst am Bau im Jahre 2005. Von der Münchner Abendzeitung wurde der Bahnhof am Eröffnungstag als "Münchens schönster U-Bahnhof" gefeiert.Der Bahnhof stellt den Auftakt einer Reihe von Kunst am Bau für U-Bahnhöfe dar, was von der Stadt München in einem internationalen Wettbewerb ausgeschrieben wurde. Die "Endlose Treppe" in München: Geschaffen hat sie Olafur Eliasson. Er ist ein dänischer Künstler isländischer Herkunft, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin und Kopenhagen. Diese Treppe ist die Einzige weltweit, auf der man ohne die Richtung zu wechseln hoch und wieder hinunter gehen kann. Die neun Meter hohe Konstruktion besteht aus zwei stählernen Doppelspiralen. Deren Helixform erinnert an die Struktur der DNA. The “Endless Staircase” in Munich: created by Olafur Eliasson. He is a Danish artist of Icelandic origin, lives and works in Berlin and Copenhagen. Der U-Bahnhof Haderner Stern in München wurde von den Architekten Braun & Haselberger geplant, die Bodenmosaike um die Sitzgruppen herum stammen von Ricarda Dietz. Der hohe, säulenlose Bahnhof ist mit einer Deckenkonstruktion aus gewelltem Metallblech versehen, aus der in den Wellenbergen quer angeordnete Lampenträger ragen, die den langgezogenen Bahnsteigraum etwas kürzer wirken lassen. An den Wänden befinden sich golden hinterlegte und hinterleuchtet wirkende Glasbausteine, die zusammen mit der Deckenkonstruktion einen edlen Eindruck hinterlassen. Die Eröffnung der Station fand am 22.05.1993 statt. The Munich Haderner Stern underground station was designed by the architects Braun & Haselberger, the floor mosaics around the seating areas were designed by Ricarda Dietz. The high, columnless station is equipped with a ceiling structure made of corrugated metal sheet, from which protrude transversely arranged lamp rails in the wave mountains, which make the long platform space appear a little shorter. On the walls are gold-backed and backlit glass blocks, which together with the ceiling construction leave a noble impression. The opening of the station took place on 22.05.1993. Der Münchener U-Bahnhof Brudermühlstraße ist mit hellen Materialien wie Granit, Edelstahl und Blechpaneelen gestaltet. Die Hintergleiswände sind in lavendel-blau gehalten, über den Gleisen ist der Sichtbeton im selben lavendel-blauen Farbton gestrichen und verschwindet durch das Beleuchtungskonzept aus dem Auge des Betrachters. Der Decken-Baldachin über dem Bahnsteig-bereich ist fast weiß und gibt dem Bahnhof ein helles und freundliches Aussehen. Der Bahnsteigboden wird immer wieder von kreisförmigen Intarsien aus gelben und dunkelblauen Mosaikfliesen unterbrochen, die Sitzgruppen und der Aufzug sind passend dazu angeordnet. Er wurde vom U-Bahn-Referat zusammen mit dem Büro Brückner & Partner geplant und am 28. Oktober 1989 in Betrieb genommen. München Hackerbrücke Sonnenuntergang
Die Hackerbrücke ist in München ein beliebter Treffpunkt zum Sonnenuntergang. Unter der Brücke befindet sich die Bahntrasse von Westen kommend zum Münchner Hauptbahnhof. Man klettert 2,5m auf den untersten waagerechten Eisenträger. Die Stahlkonstruktion befindet sich beidseitig etwas nach innen versetzt zwischen Fahrbahn und Fußweg. So besteht keine Gefahr von der Brücke abzustürzen. Die Silhouette der jungen Leute bietet bei schönem Wetter ein wunderbares Lichtspiel.

Green fire in the sky over Loch Fleet in the Scottish Highlands. I've been 'chasing Aurora' since I realized they could be seen from Scotland, around 10 years ago. So I've seen Aurora numerous times now, and I've taken some shots over the years that I'm happy with. But this shot is from a huge, bright display that lit up more of the sky than I had a lens wide enough to capture. Once it started, it lasted for around 2 hours, or perhaps longer. I went home when it seemed to be gone. There was still a forecast for more, throughout the night, but I was frozen-through, 2C, down from 8C when I arrived, and still dropping. I thought what I'd seen would be hard to beat. Plus, by the time I left the spot, it was past 1 am. A warm bed was appealing. While it had ebbs and flows, it was the most dramatic show I've ever seen. Despite a bright moon, the sky was 'ablaze', and clearly visible to the naked eye, not just on-camera with high ISO, long time exposures. Er wurde von der Hauptabteilung U-Bahn-Bau des Baureferats in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Büro Kessler + Sturm geplant, das Lichtkonzept stammt ebenso wie am Westfriedhof von Ingo Maurer. Seinen Namen verdankt er dem moorigen Flurstück, welches die U2 hier unterquert. In übergroßen Lettern ist der Name des Wohngebietes dargestellt, auf der einen Seite mit roten Lettern und grauem Hintergrund, auf der Gegenseite genau invertiert. Als einer der wenigen Bahnhöfe im Münchner Netz trägt er keine Werbung, selbst die Flächen, an denen ursprünglich Netzpläne hingen, sind nur an den äußersten Enden der Hintergleiswände angeordnet, um den Schriftzug nicht zu unterbrechen. Die Wallfahrtskirche Mariä Himmelfahrt ist eine katholische Wallfahrtskirche auf dem Hohen Peißenberg im oberbayerischen Landkreis Weilheim-Schongau. Von 1747 bis 1748 bekam die Gnadenkapelle ihre Rokoko-Ausstattung, sie ist daher prunkvoller als das angebaute Kirchengebäude. Die Wessobrunner Joseph Schmuzer und sein Sohn Franz Xaver Schmuzer übernahmen die Raumgestaltung und die Stuckatur, der vom Nordosthang des Hohen Peißenbergs stammende Freskant Matthäus Günther übernahm die Freskomalerei, Franz Xaver Schmädl war zuständig für die Bildhauerarbeiten. Das große Deckenfresko in der Gnadenkapelle stellt die Übergabe der Wallfahrtsstätte an das Kloster Rottenbuch dar.

Ganz in schwarz und gelb - den Münchner Farben - gehalten, erinnert seine Gestaltung an einen Bräukeller oder ein Bierzelt und knüpft damit direkt an den darüberliegenden Ort und dessen alljährlichen Veranstaltungshöhepunkt an. Designed by architect Alexander Freiherr von Branca, the Theresienwiese underground station already bears in its name the site of its annual biggest challenge: the Theresienwiese, where the Munich Oktoberfest takes place every year. Held entirely in black and yellow – the Munich colours – its design is reminiscent of a brewery cellar or beer tent and is thus directly linked to the place above and its annual event highlight. Reeperbahn!
Im Rahmen des Bahnprogramms „Zukunft Bahn“ werden in Hamburg zehn Tunnelstationen der S-Bahn modernisiert. Eine der Stationen ist die hier dargestellte Station Hamburg Reeperbahn. Die Bahnhöfe erhalten ein helleres und zeitgemäßes Erscheinungsbild, weshalb Wände, Bahnsteige und Verteilerebenen neu gestaltet werden. Die Arbeiten an den Stationen werden voraussichtlich 2022 abgeschlossen. Ten tunnel stations of the S-Bahn are being modernised in Hamburg as part of the “Zukunft Bahn” railway programme. One of the stations is the Hamburg Reeperbahn station shown here. The stations are given a brighter and more contemporary appearance, which is why walls, platforms and distribution levels are redesigned. Work on the stations is expected to be completed in 2022. Das Museum der Cap San Diego zeigt, neben dem Schiff selbst, diverse Wechselausstellungen und verfügt über mietbare Veranstaltungsräume. Das Museumsschiff, das seit dem 1. Dezember 2003 unter Denkmalschutz steht, hat seinen Liegeplatz an der Überseebrücke in Sichtweite des Dreimasters Rickmer Rickmers und der Hamburger Speicherstadt. Das Schiff war übrigens Teil der Kulisse einer Sequenz im Kinofilm James Bond 007 – Der Morgen stirbt nie. The Cap San Diego is an attractive attraction in the Port of Hamburg, which is visited by around 100,000 national and international visitors per year. Der Kölner Dom (offiziell: Hohe Domkirche Sankt Petrus) ist eine römisch-katholische Kirche in Köln. Der Kölner Dom ist eine der größten Kathedralen im gotischen Baustil. Sein Bau wurde 1248 begonnen und erst 1880 vollendet. Einige Kunsthistoriker haben den Dom wegen seiner einheitlichen und ausgewogenen Bauform als „vollkommene Kathedrale“ bezeichnet. Der Dom zählt seit 1996 zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe und zu den meistbesuchten Sehenswürdigkeiten Deutschlands. Cologne Cathedral (officially: High Cathedral Church of Saint Peter) is a Roman Catholic church in Cologne. Cologne Cathedral is one of the largest cathedrals in the Gothic architectural style. Its construction was begun in 1248 and was not completed until 1880. Some art historians have called the cathedral a "perfect cathedral" because of its uniform and balanced architectural form. The cathedral has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996 and is one of the most visited sights in Germany.

Das Parkhaus am Rödingsmarkt 14 in Hamburg wurde 1965 für die Sprinkenhof AG nach Plänen des Architekten Peter Neve errichtet. Das Büro Sprotte & Neve gehörte zu den namhafteren Architektbüros der Nachkriegszeit in Hamburg. Von außen ist das Gebäude eher schlicht und funktional gestalter. Wenn man jedoch das Innere betritt, eröffnet sich ein spektakulärer Lichthof mit einer sehr grafisch wirkenden Erschließungsspindel. Ihr großzügiger ovaler Grundriss wird von einer flachen Kuppel überfangen. In ihr sind Glasbausteine in Form einer Blume eingelassen, die ein diffuses Licht erzeugen und geradezu sakral wirken. The car park at Rödingsmarkt 14 in Hamburg was built in 1965 for Sprinkenhof AG according to plans by architect Peter Neve. Sprotte & Neve was one of the more renowned architects' offices of the post-war period in Hamburg. From the outside, the building is rather simple and functional. However, when you enter the interior, a spectacular atrium opens up with a very graphically-appearing spindle. Its generous oval floor plan is covered by a flat dome. In it are embedded glass blocks in the form of a flower, which produce a diffuse light and have an almost sacred effect. Website: www.heiko-roebke-photography.de

Der Münchener U-Bahnhof Harthof: Die säulenlose Bahnsteighalle strahlt eine gewisse Nüchternheit aus, ist sie doch in ihrer Gestaltung vergleichsweise "unaufregend". Bei näherer Betrachtung fallen jedoch die durchdacht integrierte Beleuchtung und der behutsame Umgang mit Formen, Farben und Materialien auf. Die gefaltete Dachkonstruktion dient gleichermaßen als Lichtreflektor wie auch als gliederndes Element des Bahnsteigs, hat man doch das Gefühl, in einem Bauwerk mit herkömmlichen Dach zu sein. Die mit hellrosa und granatroten Glasfliesen verzierten Wände nehmen Bezug auf das kräftige rot des Linienbandes. Geplant wurde der Bahnhof vom Architektur-büro Obermeyer in Zusammenarbeit mit dem städtischen U-Bahn-Referat. Eröffnung: 20. November 1993. Grüner wird’s nicht: Im Versmann-Haus in der Hansestadt Hamburg sind die Etagen des Gebäudes nicht ausschließlich per Fahrstuhl zu erreichen. Treppen gibt es in diesem Haus nämlich auch, aber dieser fotogene Lichthof mit seinen konzentrischen Formen, der sich durch das komplette Gebäude zieht, ist der Blickfang schlechthin. Das Gebäude wurde 1912 nach Plänen von Johann Gottlieb Rambatz und Wilhelm Jollasse als Kontorhaus erbaut. It doesn’t get any greener: In the Versmann-Haus in the Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the floors of the building are not only accessible by elevator. There are stairs in this building, but this photogenic atrium with its concentric shapes that runs through the entire building is the eye-catcher par excellence. Die phantasieanregende Lobby im Berliner Bogen zu Hamburg: Am Hamburger Anckelmannsplatz scheint das Bürohaus Berliner Bogen über dem Wasser zu schweben: Auf einer Länge von rund 140 Metern überspannt das Gebäude das Ende eines kilometerlangen Hochwasserbassins und schafft auf diese Weise kostbares Bauland im Großstadtraum. An beiden Uferseiten abgestützt, wölben sich Stahlbögen bis zu einer Höhe von 36 Metern parabelförmig über den Kanal. Das Gebäude ist als Haus im Haus konzipiert: mit einem inneren, massiven Teil, der auf rund 32 000 Quadratmetern Platz für mehr als 1200 Arbeitsplätze bietet, und einer Glashülle, die diese Kamm-artige Struktur umschließt. Die außergewöhnliche Konstruktion ist nicht nur optisch eindrucksvoll, sondern spart auch Energie. Deckenansicht in der Basilika Marienweiher Die Basilika Mariä Heimsuchung im Marktleugaster Ortsteil Marienweiher ist die Wallfahrtsbasilika der römisch-katholischen Pfarrei Marienweiher des Dekanats Hof im Erzbistum Bamberg. Innerhalb des Erzbistums ist Marienweiher der größte Marienwallfahrtsort und neben dem Bamberger Dom, der Basilika Vierzehnheiligen und der Basilika Gößweinstein eine der vier basilicae minores. Marienweiher zählt zu den ältesten Marienwallfahrtsorten Deutschlands, den jährlich rund 8000 Pilger besuchen. Die Kirche erhielt 1993 den päpstlichen Ehrentitel basilica minor.

Der Bahnhof Westfriedhof ist wegen seiner von Ingo Maurer entworfenen Beleuchtung ein beliebtes Fotomotiv auch für Werbeagenturen. 11 große Leuchten mit 3,80 Meter im Durchmesser hüllen den Bahnhof in die Farben blau, rot und gelb und gliedern die Bahnsteig-fläche damit in verschiedene Farbschattierungen. Die Wände und die Decke werden von blauem Licht eingehüllt und verleihen dem Bahnhof einen gewissen "Höhlen-Charakter", die Bahnsteigflächen selber sind jedoch äußerst hell. Trotz der punktuellen Beleuchtung ergeben sich keine dunklen Ecken. St. Martin (Fischbachau)
Die Pfarrkirche St. Martin (Martinsmünster) in Fischbachau wurde 1492 nach einem Brand neu erbaut. Die Vorgängerkirche wurde von 1096 bis 1110 als Klosterkirche eines Benediktinerordens errichtet. Die Stuckierung der Kirche stammt aus mehreren Entwicklungsphasen: Bereits 1692 entstanden gegossene Apostelkreuze von Leonhard Mayr, um 1737/1738 der Stuck des Mittelschiffs etwa gleichzeitig derjenige der Seitenschiffe in etwas anderer Art, 1765 ergänzender Rocaille-Stuck. Insgesamt 73 Fresken wurden um 1737/1738 durch den Ingolstädter Melchior Puchner geschaffen, im Hauptschiff Szenen aus dem Leben des hl. Martin. Klosterkirche St. Benedikt (Benediktbeuern)
Basilika St.Benedikt in Benediktbeuren Oberbayern Das Gebäude ist eine der ersten bedeutenden Barockkirchen auf dem Land in Oberbayern und Teil des Klosters Benediktbeuern. 1972 wurde die Kirche zur Basilica minor erhoben. Die große Orgel wurde zwischen 1682 und 1686 von dem Salzburger Meister Christoph Egedacher gebaut. 1770 wurde sie von Andreas Jäger erweitert und bekam einen neuen Prospekt. Das Werk mit 33 Registern auf zwei Manualen und Pedal ist erhalten. Die Spiel- und Registertrakturen sind mechanisch.

St. Gereon (Köln)
St. Gereon ist eine von zwölf großen romanischen Kirchen in Köln und liegt im Stadtteil Altstadt-Nord. Es heißt, Köln sei die einzige Stadt weltweit, in deren Altstadtbereich heute noch so viele große romanische Kirchen erhalten sind. Das ist darauf zurückzuführen, dass Köln zur Gründungszeit dieser Kirchen die bedeutendste Stadt Deutschlands war und in ihrer Größe auf Rom und Konstantinopel folgte. St. Gereon ist ein herausragendes Zeugnis spätantiker und hochmittelalterlicher Architektur. Bestimmendes Element des Baukörpers ist ein gewölbter spätantiker Ovalbau, der im frühen 13. Jahrhundert in die Form eines Dekagons (Zehneck) mit je vier antiken Konchen im Norden wie im Süden „überführt“ wird. Dieser so gewonnene Zentralbau ist in seiner Art nördlich der Alpen einzigartig.
